Village History

Did You Know ?

  • The 100 foot steel mast at Greenmore was erected after the Second World War for radio and television experiments - obviously successful.
  • Miss Maggie Beeson retired as postmistress in 1945. She lived to be 104 and was the oldest bellringer in Britain.
  • Sites where there have been public houses or beer houses include Rifleman Cottage, Shirvells Hill, Chestnuts, Checkendon and The Folly, South Stoke Road.
